Pearl City Seafood Restaurant San Francisco Reviews
Popular restaurant for the locals. Sep 07, 2008
This was definitely the most interesting place we ate at when we were in San Francisco for the weekend. We were in China Town and had asked a local where a good place to eat was. He told us Pearl City was good and the prices were still resonable. We decided to go and when we walked down to it, the was a line outside the door. Obviously the man was correct, it must be a good place.
We stood in line waiting for the hostess to ask us how many was in our party. The place was completely packed, (it was lunch time though). Well, we waited and waited and she never even acknowledged us, even when we were right in front of her. So finally we asked her for a table for two and she was very nice and tried to understand us and put us on the list.
Once we were seated, we were served tea and then that was all. We were waiting for a menu when we realized that we probably weren't going to get one. Instead, these servers would come around with food and show it to you and you could decide if you wanted it or not. If you did, they would put down a plate of 3 and mark it on your tab. We grabbed a couple of those, but they seemed to be only appetizers. Also, no one there spoke English so we didn't know how to ask them for an actual dish.
We were there for about an hour trying to decide how to get a main dish. We saw that some of the other people had some so we knew it could be done. I even tried to ask the man who gave us the tea how to order and he simply stated, "Order". While the appetizers were delicious, we really wanted a main dish so I decided to try to ask one of the ladies serving the appetizers how to order rice. After I said, "rice", she seemed to understand what we were asking for and said back to us, "waitress", and pointed to this other lady. It was so funny because we hadn't seen the waitress before and here we were sitting there for an hour trying to place an order. And after all the time, it was so simple, just ask the waitress right? =) And I guess that was what the man meant when I asked him how to order, he literally told us to order lol!
So once the "waitress" came to get our order, she still didn't speak English but she knew we were asking for rice, general's chicken, and chow mein, and they brought it out to us right away!
The food was really good and the prices were really good, especially for SF. The atmosphere was very crowded but we enjoyed it. At one point it was so loud and all you could hear was Chinese. It really felt like we were in another country. When we were leaving, we noticed another American couple come in and sit down and already they looked confused! We just laughed and thought about how we felt 2 hours ago when we were trying to order some rice!!
I would definitely recommend eating here if in SF. Just remember that it is another culture and don't expect for them to act how you would normally expect restaurant employees to act in an American restaurant. Make sure to ask them for a table, signal for their attention when you need them, (they won't necessarily just come to you on their own), and ask for the main dish when you want it, again, they won't just come and ask you =) Also, if you don't like to try new things or to be in crowded places, this place is definitely not for you.
