Pazari Veliko Tarnovo Veliko Turnovo Reviews
A pearl in the heart of bulgaria. Apr 21, 2011
Veliko Turnovo is an amazing but yet not crowded place in the centre of Bulgaria. It is rather difficult to get there since there are no direct trains from Sofia and railway station are usually named in bulgarian only. English speaking students can help you and since there are a few of them studying in town you got a fair chance to meet one of them on the train. Driving by yourself makes things a lot easier
Veliko Turnovo was once the capital of a great bulgarian empire and had its best time in the 13th. and 14th. century. The ruins of the big fortress, which are still in fairly good shape, give you an idea of how big and important the city was. The Wall is still standing whereas buildings are mostly ruins. They sometime also got light shows there as well.
There have been 2 Hostels at the time we have been there and both of them enjoyed a good record. the town itself is quite nice to walk through but there are no more major sights. The food is great and everything still is stupidly cheap. Just outside the town you can find interesting monastries, castles and hikes, hostels usually know all about it and will inform you in detail.
