What a Purdy Place... Nov 25, 2010
So I went to visit Mom for an early Thanksgiving last weekend. She moved back to the town close to the farm where she was raised about twenty years ago, and since she now resides in what was formerly a small dentist office there isn’t much room to spare so I typically put up at the Stardust Motel a couple miles away. Your faithful hotel reviewer packed along his digital camera explicitly to write up a review of the Stardust, but they lost my reservation and had to put me up at the other facility they own a mile and a half further down the road --- the Purdy Motel.
The Stardust isn’t exactly opulent, so I was open to the change in location, though a bit concerned that they were quite honest about my room permitting smoking. Well, this place was classic. I think the room I scored was the only one that wasn’t permanently occupied (it seems more like apartments than a motel), and there was only a slight hint of cigarette smoke lingering in the spacious room of cinderblock and paneling. Several residents were hanging out on the second story deck and greeted me when I arrived, thinking I was somebody who lived there.
What a riot. This isn’t posh, but for a ridiculously cheap price I had plenty of square footage and a complete kitchen. These days you frequently get a microwave and small fridge, but I even had an oven with stove top! When I went into the bathroom I was tickled to see they still had the paper floor mats, which I haven’t seen in perhaps twenty years! So in spite of the Spartan accommodations it is a deal for the daily rate. The drawbacks for me were that it lies along a busy trucker road and you could hear the big rigs whizzing by all night, and that the office is back at the Stardust, so you won’t get instant satisfaction should you have any complaint. However, I can vouch that the management has always been gracious and responsive when I’ve camped out at the Stardust, so you are probably covered.
