A welcomed and cheap change of food May 03, 2011
The Baladin’s are a family making Italian goods in the old country such as beers and pasta. Essaouira is lucky enough to be importing that pasta and offering up in Pasta Baladin. The restaurant is just off the square nearest to the Atlantic walls of the medina and easily recognisable by its trendy decor and bags of pasta for sale in the window. After 5 days of tagine eating in Marrakech this place was a welcomed change!

The concept is simple – chose one of the 5 pasta shapes for your base and then one of the 10 sauce options to go with it. The shapes are all the ones you are familiar with from spaghetti to fusilli and the sauces range from a pesto up through a spicy picante chorizo one. I like my pasta al dente and was pleasantly surprised at how well the Moroccan chefs turned it out for me. I later discovered there was some training from authentic Italian chefs which comes as no surprise when you taste how good it was.

The meal starts with some complimentary olives and oil and balsamic with traditional Moroccan bread to keep you busy as the pasta boils away. Sadly beverages are limited to soft drinks so no Chianti to go with but you’ll be in and out pretty quick and you can afford two bottles after this low cost meal. The price is very cheap compared to some of the other restaurants so if you need a break from lamb tagine pop in here for lunch or dinner and it will keep you going throughout the rest of the holiday.
