Affordable local fare with few tourists Jul 02, 2010
A friend and I visited this place after recommendatiosn from other tourists, but a tourist trap it isn't. After visiting much of the very touristy places in Iquitos this was such a refreshing change. I love eating where the locals eat as generally the food is better and cheaper and you get a much more rewarding experience as often you have no choice but to test your language skills if you are in a non-English speaking country. The staff were really friendly, the service excelllent as was the food (big portions and as is typical of South America, lots of carbs!), we also had live music as well, what more could you ask for?

Tasty local food in a restaurant know by the locals - El Zorrito Nov 25, 2009
For last dinner in Iquitos I wanted to go to a place that was recommended by locals. I asked for advice to the guide and told him, that I didn't care if the place was fancy or not, as long as it was the locals favorite.

This restaurant in located in Belen area, in order to get there from the Main Square you have to catch a mototaxi. Just tell the driver you are going to "El Zorrito" and he will know where to drive you.

The place is a house which was turned into a restaurant. There are some tables outdoors next to the grill and open kitchen. Decor inside is simple. This restaurant is not a touristy place. It was crowded but just with locals. Also there's usually a musician playing Peruvian music.

Menu is about local food. We tried the following:

-chorizo: local sausage served with plantains and yuca as side.

-juane de chonta: my favorite, thumbs up! Juane is usually do with rice, but here they use the palm tree heart. It was the best!

-gizzards: they were grilled. Very tasty.

To drink I recommend you to ask for a local juice. On the table you will find 3 spicy dips. It's worth to give them all a try.

Staff is helpful and polite. Although they are always busy, they find time for you and do their best to be as fast as possible.

If you want to try something local surrounded by locals, this is the perfect place! Furthermore, it's really cheap.
