Parliament House - Canberra, Australia Oct 08, 2008
When I learned that the Parliament House, Canberra, Australia allows visitors during the proceedings, I got curious in getting there.

The Parliament House was built on top of a hill in line with the old Parliament House. From afar, one can see that it has resemblance of the old Parliament House.

The 81-meter stainless flagpole which is raised by four legs as well as the Coat of Arms would catch one's attention.

There is strict security check as one gets to the foyer. I stood in awe as I walked inside. It is a magnificent achitecture. There are the marble staircases and great timber pillars, the white hanging clocks, the tapestry at the Great Hall and other paintings.

Having seen the inner court gardens through the glass walls, I wished I could get inside. They have great lanscapes!

It was my first time to have seen the House of Representatives and Senate Chambers. The House of Representatives Chamber comes in green motif while the Senate Chamber comes in red. While walking through the halls connecting the two chambers, one will see the portraits of important figures in the politics.

Indeed, the opening of the House to the public makes one feels welcomed. There is this strange feeling of warmth...

The new Parliament House Sep 23, 2005
I visited the old and the new Parliament House when I was in Canberra. In the new Parliament House we got a free tour through the building and they explained a bit how the Australian government works. It was nice to hear some background stories about the building and learn about the Australian government since I knew almost nothing about the government. When we visited there was a holiday/break and they where working to make everything ready for when they would start again (some new chairs etc). After the tour we visited the roof (where the flag is standing) and from there you have a nice view of the city.

Parliament House is a surprisingly worthwhile visit in Canberra. The building was opened in 1988 (it is just behind Old Parliament House, built in 1927). It was designed by Romaldo Giurgola in a style different from any other parliament - it is essentially buried underneath a grassy hill, with only the main entrance way open, and topped by an enormous spire flying the Australian flag (81m high, the flag alone is 12.8m by 6.4m, the flagpole weighs 220 tonnes).

Pre-John Howard and the Australian-assisted Iraq invasion visitors were free to wander onto the grassy hill above Parliament sitting, now this is blocked by ugly crash barriers, but the site is still nice to wander around. The entire city of Canberra is designed with Parliament House the hub of a wheel, so the flagpole of Parliament House is the best place to see the layout of Canberra, allowing you to look down long parades to such icons as the Australian War Memorial.

Inside Parliament House the public is welcome to watch question time and to see the political history of Australia. One of the highlights is a copy of the Magna Carta written in 1297.
