Old but Accommodating. Nov 01, 2010
I was happy to finally visit Iceland. There was the IcelandAir Package: 4 nights + 2 return tickets from Schiphol -> Keflavik = 698 Euro. We were given two hotels to choose from but the one we wanted was unavailable thus, we ended choosing Park Inn Island during the booking of the plane ticket.

Reykjavik, is a quiet and big city in Iceland. Everything is spread out and not squeezed into one area. Therefore, getting to a shopping area would require you to either be ready to have a nice long stroll/walk or just board a bus there.

Park Inn Island is located near a shopping mall, Kringlan. There's also a street of shops located central but it is quite a walk to get there (from the hotel, since the hotel is located on the outskirt of the central). The hotel is near (2km) the FlyBus station whereby you will need to get to their international airport.

If you're lucky to book or perhaps pay more for a good view, you probably might get to see the mountains from a far.

Breakfast is included, which is great and it starts from 7AM to 10AM (Monday - Friday) and 7AM to 11AM (Saturday & Sunday). The breakfast is a good spread and you could get fresh toast by toasting your slices in the rolling toaster! There was yogurt, really good and fried bacon and scrambled eggs and grapes and much more! A range of tea and small packs of honey (the white kind!) and types of juices and milk from the dispenser.

Breakfast was really good so we usually like to stuff ourselves up before heading out. Nothing's cheap in Iceland so if breakfast is included, why not fill yourself up and last through till it is time for dinner.

The room's interior is really OLD. There's a part whereby it is like a sitting place between the table and the cupboard. It seemed somewhat like old orange carpet being cut into the right size and then being pasted on to (sadly we forgot to snap a photo of it). An electric kettle was provided and it looked REALLY old and well, chemical reaction has already was browning in there. The bathroom, I don't know if they cleaned it well but we spotted a stain in the tub/bath area (yup, we did snap a photo of it). The old shower curtain was still in place (but not extremely clean as you could still spot some yellowish stains on it) and there were heaters in the bathroom and in the bedroom. The television channels were limited and there's a Swiss/German channel (I think). There's probably one English channel...I didn't mind it. There is a mini fridge that doesn't work. Thus, 'blessed' with cold weather, we placed our drinks in a plastic bag and hanged it outside to chill. Talk about being innovative :D

I must say, there's something weird, a double/queen sized bed has two single size quilts. I wonder why...maybe they didn't want us to fight over the quilt. Hehehehe my boyfriend mind but I didn't.

Lets talk about the room service, they do make the rooms everyday (even if you didn't put out the sign to make the room). The first day we stayed, the room was made neatly and such but the second day and so on, I could tell there was less care to it. Probably not the same dedicated person, someone who seemed less bothered and just made the bed. Perhaps this person was hoping to see some tips left behind? Anyway, that didn't bother us much as long as nothing went missing and that the room/bed was made.

I have yet to check how much the accommodation and flight cost. My guess the accommodation isn't cheap. Well, after stating the conditions of the room, you could clearly understand why I placed it as 3 out of 5. I would say that there are far worse places to stay in during a vacation; this hotel, Park Inn Island isn't all that bad even though it is old.

Breakfast is included and the front desk service is really good and helpful (if you have any problems). The people are really friendly and nice there, thus nothing to worry and they do speak good English. :)

Will I recommend this hotel? Why not? I will recommend this place if you wouldn't mind the old interior. It is considered clean (not very clean though) and breakfast is included! Even if you were to leave before 7AM, there's some light breakfast (mini buffet) placed at the bar counter for you to snack. Coffee and tea in the airpots. Pretty much it is quite a good deal to go with the air tickets. Besides, it is one of the hotel destinations which, FlyBus would take you to and from the Iceland international airport.

Parking next and around the hotel is free. The hotel WiFi is a complete rip off. I guess the price is around 5 euro/hour!! We brought our unlocked MiFi and used a local prepaid Siminn simcard for only 3,30 euro. 400MB was enough for our stay.

If you're thinking of visiting Iceland, given two hotel choices...pick the other but if that one isn't available, you can rest assure that Park Inn Island hotel isn't all too bad. :) Unless you wouldn't mind paying more and stay in Hilton hotel which is considered near to this hotel.
The queen size bed with 2 quilts.
The bulky but small TV.
The 20 year old kettle with free i…
The innovative idea when you don't…
