City of cafes Jul 28, 2013
Can't even begin to describe it ... but my favourite activity in Paris has to be sitting in a cafe ... any cafe, really, that is convenient to you, and where you can literally sit the whole day, preferably at a table that affords you a view on the street or square in front, reading, writing, people-watching, ruminating, having endless cups of coffee, and smoking if you do (though you will have to sit at the terraces for this now, ingeniously devised by cafe owners post the ban) ... my frequent haunts include Cafe Nord Sud on rue du Poteau in the 18th and the cafes at Place de la Sorbonne ... at the latter there is a lovely bookshop too, Libraire Vrin, if you like philosophy, with books in French but also English ... and talking of English books, do check out Village Voice on rue du Princess in the St Germain area and Shakespeare Co in the St Michel area ... not only are they among the best English language bookshops in Paris but also host frequent readings... and if you do like things literary, then Paris is a historical treasure-house ... from Proust's claustrophobic apartment atop a bank to the hotel rooms of Sartre and Simon du Beauvoir to the habitats of Verlaine, Rimbaud, Mallarmé, Sartre, Perec, ... the list is endless ... tell me if you are interested and I'll send you an itinerary ... or refer you to the wonderful but now defunct Traveller's Literary Companion series, whose edition on France has been my companion in Paris over the last ten summers or so each year ... don't miss the cemeteries either, especially the ones at Pere Lachaise and Montparnasse ... that is where you'll find most of these writers now once you have visited their haunts ... not to mention Jim Morrison's bust, one of the most visited in Pere Lachaise ... of course, the usual Parisian sites are there ... the Louvre, the Seine, Montmartre, Jardin Luxembourg, Notre Dame, Bastille ... any guidebook will give you these... but it is idling in cafes that will give you a truer flavour of Parisian romance ...
