Pargas Overview

Pargas is a bilingual town in the South West of Finland. The population is slightly more than 15 500 people, with a majority of people speaking Swedish as their native language.

Pargas is called the capital of the archipelago. Since 5 municipalities in the archipelago became one (1.1.2009) it is now the largest archipelago town in the world! It covers more than 10 000 islands and over 5500 sqaure kilometers. 80% is water and between the islands you travel on road ferries.

Right in the centre of Pargas is a big open limestone mine. This is the largest open quarry in the Nordic countries, one hundred meters deep, from which limestone has been mined continuously since the 1300's.
