Less known than it deserves Nov 28, 2010
I try to mix in some lesser known places among my reviews but this may come closest to being completely unknown. We did not know of it ourselves until we picked up a leaflet in Caernarfon last year! We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and it is only £4 for an adult so at least look at the website and you may feel moved. It is on the main road from Caernarfon to Pwllheli shortly after it branches off the Porthmadog road. Obviously it can be fitted into a holiday with mountains, castles and beaches.

The impressive building dates to the 1830s and was built for Lord Newborough but the original owners of the estate were said to be descended from Cilmyn Troed Ddu, who settled the estate in the 9th century. (Apparently there is doubt about whether he existed!)

The gardens (grade 1 listed) have a sort of structured informality, which we found very appealing indeed.
