Pleasant Park of Leisure in Lyon Feb 28, 2016
Parc de la Tête d'Or, which means Park of the Golden Head, apparently takes its name from a legend that there is a golden head of Christ buried in the park. The park dates to the 19th century (~1858) and covers an area of around 1.2 square km (~0.5 square miles). It is the largest urban park in Europe and includes a lake, zoo, botanical garden, and some sports and various recreation facilities. There are a number of entrances, but the most grand is Porte des Enfants du Rhône (Children of the Rhone Gate) at the southwest corner of the park, where there is a large and ornate gate. Outside this gate in General LeClerc Square is a large monument dedicated to soldiers of Lyon who died in the Franco Prussian War of 1870.

This is a very pleasant park of leisure for strolling around and relaxation. Enjoy the expansive lake with lots of wildlife to enjoy, mostly geese, ducks and various birds. There are a number of rose gardens and a wide variety of trees. Some other things of interest include an area for 'urban bees' and some interesting sculptures. There is also a big botanical garden and zoo here also, but I didn't visit these sections of the park as it was still winter time, though early March, and the weather was chilly and overcast. Figured I'd save it for another time if in Lyon again with better weather.

Wonderful park and quite large for an urban one. The flowers were only just getting started on my visit.

I spent a whole morning at this park and enjoyed it so much! There's so many areas to explore and when the flowers are in full bloom, it looks so colorful!

Apparently the most popular version is that, long before the park was build, Crusaders buried some treasure here, including a golden head in the likeness of Christ. Sounds rather hokey to me, but a good story.

Very nice park, big and very green. There's also a lake in the middle. It's closed to the center of Lyon and very nice after a day of work to just lay on the grass.

There's a few animals, you can easily go rollerskating on the way. Or ride your bike or just do your jogging routine.

Close to it there's a big movie theater and the "international city". And if you get sick of it, just go walk along the water. The sides are well organised.

So that's a very nice green place to enjoy.
