Although it's officially spelled with an "i" on the end of the name, the natives of this colonial town prefer the indian form with an "y". So, as it must be, the city of Paraty is a beautiful and proud small community located on the south coast of Rio de Janeiro state.

Paraty was a busy and rich city during colonial and imperial times, with one of the main export ports of gold at that time. Tons of the gold mined in Minas Gerais were sent to the metropolis, Portugal, through the ports of Paraty. This particular fact made the city a favorite target amongst pirates everywhere - which only adds to the city's beautiful history, explaining why the old town is built from curved roads.

Paraty has no regular squared blocks like any other city. It's built pretty much like today's slums. The idea behind those tricky streets is that only locals could move with ease, making it almost impossible for them to be followed by a foreigner - in the slum's case, the police.

And now, a special guide through the streets of Paraty: some of the oldest buildings in the city carry a variety of obscure masonry symbols on its corner walls. There's a handful of legends about pirate treasures, and a secret path marked by those symbols. So if you ever get lost, just follow the masons and let Paraty lead you to one of its many treasures.

Finally a beach

After only a  few days in Brazil I can already tell that it is my favorite.  I was pleased to see that the Brazilian coast delivered the landscapes that I had envisioned of south america  prior to arrival. Parati is a beautiful colonial  town with eye candy around every corner.   Lush tropical green forests, white sand, aqua  blue waves; paradise.  Roaming the carless cobblestone streets lined with stark white building with bright colorful doorways ate ...

Now we know what everyone is raving about when they talk about Brazilian beaches (and not to mention the horrendous prices here)! We arrived in Paraty from Sao Paulo (the most dirty and disgusting looking city we have seen this far) at about 10pm. We wandered around for over an hour looking for somewhere to stay and thought we would be sleeping on the streets and no where had room, although it did help us to condition to the fact we would be paying about $120R ($70NZD) for a room! We went ba...

My 2nd time through Brazil, I felt there was one last obstacle in South America for me to "conquer" -the Amazon. But it all started out in Rio with the Mecca of Brazialian Jiu-Jitsu, the legendary Gracie Barra Academy. Good times, interesting country.

Parati, Brazil

So I decide to head back down to Parati with the new group for a couple of days to escape the madness of Rio. Andy and I head out to pick up Freida (that's the name of the truck) from truck park and head back in to pick up everybody else. There's a few goodbyes to be done from the rest of the group before we head away. My navigation skills are put to use as Andy and I try and get out of Rio, after one wrong turn we manage to get on the right road and head to Parati. Stop at a wee lookout for ...
