A charming step back in time for the microbudget traveler Feb 23, 2012
Well, the first thing I have to say is that TB classifying this as being in "Georgetown" may be a bit misleading because of the implication that it is located downtown and close to the action. In fact it is located well away from the historic downtown area and is not within walking distance of any major tourism destinations (fine by me).

There is a bus stop right out the front but buses are not very frequent. On the opposite side of the road you can catch a bus all the way to Batu Feringhi. Getting back again is the difficult part, as again buses are not frequent.

Taxi is the method of choice, relatively expensive and especially since recently the taxi drivers have all joined forces in an effort to take advantage of the tourist situation and charge you a fixed fee between points A and B which they get from a card (questionable legality, but don't argue the point with the driver, suggest not tipping drivers, however as they are over-charging, RM40 for a metered trip of RM13.70 is not a reasonable markup).

That's a digression. Let's get back to discussing the hotel.

The location is peaceful despite being situated on the busy Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah. It shares a car park with the Ocean Garden Restuarant, and you will NOT get preferential parking simply for being a hotel guest. On certain nights the car park gets so busy that there is very tight and strict traffic control. It is VERY busy here on some nights such as weekends and holidays.

You can walk from the hotel down to the beach and have a look at the scenery. Don't even think about going in the water. Not only is it polluted, but it's also filled with dangerous creatures. You do not want to be in that water, trust me!

The reception area at Paramount is large and inviting. The hotel was built in the early 20th century, and staying here is very much like being transported back in time. The hotel, at the time I stayed there, had not been significantly refurbished.

Most noticeable are the power sockets and fixtures, which are antiquated to say the least. The fan over the bed was decidedly unnerving at times due to the amount of wobble, but it stayed in place, miraculously enough.

It was reported to me by another guest of the hotel that it is haunted. I personally did not get scared but I have heard that people have been scared by the ghost. I think you can take it or leave it that there's a ghost there and don't consider it to be really part of the hotel review. Besides, you're not a dimensionalist are you? Surely you're not going to discriminate against somebody just because they're not alive?!

The bed is OK. It's nothing special. It's been slept on a lot of times. There were no bed bugs in my room, despite the low price. The furnishings are old but this is acceptable because it adds to the atmosphere of the place. It would be a shame to modernize it.

The bathroom takes a little bit of figuring out. Once you work out how to operate everything, it is adequate. Don't expect wonders. This place is a relic and it's priced low enough that you accept a few quirks.

There is no refrigerator in the room. There is a very small one in a common lounge area that is quite a nice place to sit and read, look out the window, and recharge the battery on your computer or phone (since the power sockets in the room are too ancient for that purpose). The antique furnishings and lovely ornate architectural features really make this a special place to relax.

There are many very charming features of the hotel that will delight you if you are open to them. The negatives, well there are a few. For one thing, your room is not very secure. If you have anything valuable you should carry it with you, including your passport. The staff of the hotel are very honest and very friendly. It's the other guests and the general public you'd have to watch out for.

Getting into your room through the window would be very difficult, and there is an antique lock on your door that can keep out most people, but it is actually very easy to obtain a key for any room in the hotel, although obviously I am not going to tell you how to to do it. Just take my word for it, your valuables are not safe in the hotel room when you are not there, and you probably should have some sort of door knob alarm thing on your door when you're asleep just in case (never had a problem), which is a good practice anyway regardless of whether you're staying here or at a five star resort.

When getting a taxi, do not go up to the main street and wave one down, ask the reception staff to phone one for you. The drivers will come all the way down the driveway to get you. You can also walk up to the street and catch the bus from the bus stop (very cheap). Taxi out, bus back is not a bad formula.

Best things: Quiet, peaceful, seaside, has a restaurant, bus, friendly staff, lovely historical place, very charming.

Worst things: location a bit far out for most people, long walk to buy anything that you need such as drinks, common refrigerator for all guests which is very small, slightly complicated bathroom facilities which are just adequate, busy car park at night, rooms are extremely insecure depending on who is staying there, "haunted".
