Paraiso Club Corn Island Reviews
Too expensive for what you get. May 02, 2009
We saw the website for the Paraiso Beach Hotel and thought we had found a little piece of Paradise on Corn Island.......Well once we got there we were in for a bit of a surprise. For starters we found out that the deluxe Cabana (now called a suite @ $65 dollars a night) that we had specifically reserved had already been rented out (and the person in it said that they had made the reservation for it many months before so they should have known). So they gave us one of their standard cabanas (@ $60 dollars a night).
The cabanas look fairly cute from the outside but once you get inside the cuteness is limited. The bathroom is clean and tiled and not so bad but there was a swinging doors on the opening to the bathroom offering no privacy for those times when privacy is important. There is only unheated water which is fine in the tropics (but not for the price that they expect you to pay)
The bedroom/Living room had a terrible paint job, the bed was uncomfortable (a matress on a cement platform on the floor) and there was a rundown feel to it. The windows had no glass so to keep the coolness of the air conditioner in the room you had to keep the wooden shutters closed which gave the room a cavelike feel. The ceiling was thin fiberboard that when the rats start running across it in the middle of the night it can get a little bit unnerving. There were also a lot of ants. My girlfriend made me keep the lights on all night because she was afraid of many things about this room.
The electricity was only on for a short time that we stayed in the room. It seemed like there was some sort of issue with the breakers but it sounded like there were other issues with power.
We did some research on Trip Advisor and whenever someone said anything bad about the hotel the owner would make a response to the website making up some lame excuse. When we met him he seemed like a bit of a salesman. (he is from Holland)
The hotel has fairly nice grounds. The beachfront is nice too with lounge chairs and palapa shade structures. The hotel has a walled compound and there are security people walking around. They usually hang out on the beach. One of them got a little testy one morning when I asked him whether he knew how to get the power back on.
Overall it is a good location, the restaurant is pretty good (but very expensive) the grounds are nice but the rooms are scary. Be sure to get your rabies shot and bring the ant spray when you come here. Also don't forget a flashlight with extra batteries because the lights will be out half the time.
