Jungle expedition in Belem
posted by:

After crossing the equator yesterday night at 23.40 we reached Belem in Brazil, this morning. We were a little bit delayed so that also the tours started later than they were supposed to start. Cristiane, Joyce, Mr. MacDonald and myself were the escorts for the Guama River Boat tour, which took us out to a wonderful island close to the city. We cruised for approximately 30 minutes on the river and saw a lot of river houses standing around. Most of them were made of wood and each one at a smal...

My 2nd time through Brazil, I felt there was one last obstacle in South America for me to "conquer" -the Amazon. But it all started out in Rio with the Mecca of Brazialian Jiu-Jitsu, the legendary Gracie Barra Academy. Good times, interesting country.

When I was planning my trip at home, my initial plan was to take the boat from Manaus to Belem, which takes 5 days. As I heard people complaining about the trip being so boring, I decided to sell my boat ticket and take a flight to Belem. Except for some historical buildings and the ver-o-peso, a very busy and crowded market, there are not so many charming things in Belem. And as the weather is hot and humid, I decided to move on to São Luiz the day after my arrival....

This is paradise!!! Arrived at the sweltering ´beach´town of Alter do Chao, a tiny little place that has nothing more than a holiday feel to it. We found a great place to stay that even had hooks on the porch of our room for our hammocks! We wondered down the dirt track to the water front and the water stretches out with little sandy beach islands off the shore. We got a boat out to the island, and here we found soft white sand beaches like the Caribbean and swam in the warm water. It was ...

The Amazon awaits!

KERRY - We flew to Belem from Sao Luis and managed to meet our friends Esme and Conor who we had met in Natal, on the flight to Belem. They were not entirely sure what to saw to me when they saw my black eyes! The views of the amazon from the air were amazing, it really is vast! We decided to head for the HI hostel in Belem which turned out to be a good option, it was a large place and had internet access as well as washing at a decent rate. It was also near to a supermarket (which...

One of the main attractions in the North of Brazil is the Amazon river and its basin. It takes five days to go by ship from Belém to Manaus, passing by two important cities of the region: Santarém and Parintins. Stopping to visit one of them can be a good idea. I did it in Santarém, and travelled to Alter do Chão, fifty minutes away by bus. If you choose to travel sleeping in a hammock - the cheapest option - you should learn some tips. The best ships are, from the best to the least...

Marabá
posted by:

Praegu Marabá bussijaamas käisin just dussi all ja minu pealt maha voolas tükk aega savipruuni vett. Esimene tund aega bussi peal valdas mind lihtsalt õudus. Mõtlesin,...

The Peter Allen song starts "I've been to cities that never close down, New York and Rio and old London town" So I thought why not use the song to plan my trip? Add Tokyo and Lisbon, starting Dec 5. Include New years eve and Carnival in Rio and check the Iguazu falls from the Argentine side. My good friend Dave Wylie found me an apartment in Copacabana right near the beach, another good friend from my home in Surfers Paradise, Sudzie, said "hey mate I am coming with you to Rio".

The River Journey
posted by:

To get to the coast we booked passage on an Amazon riverboat - fun, but not quite the romantic journey we'd imagined.  It's cramped, air-conditioned, and ruled by a couple of stern kitchen ladies who control your daily schedule.  More like joining the Navy than taking a cruise.
