If in Cyprus and interested in nature, Paphos forest should not be missed Apr 01, 2008
A forested, rather pristine, uninhabited part of Cyprus. It is hard to believe that this is actually part of this sun, sea and sand tourist destination, but there you are. Exploration by foot or mountain bike is excellent and the forest is traversed by a network of good quality dirt roads (and a few asphalt roads). There are valleys here with streams that have water all year round, and hikes one can make under continuous shades in summer. The vegetation is largely dominated by pine, and one can also find planes and alder, an endemic oak species, strawberry trees and hawthorn. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon you may spot groups of the elusive moufflon.
In summer you may meet safari jeeps and if you hike on a dirt road it can get a bit 'dusty'.
There are many organised picnic areas: Komitidji, Pera Vasa, Cedar valley, Stavros, Ayios Merkourios, Livadi, Ayia.
Locations I would highly recommend include Platy valley, Cedar valley (and vicinity) and Roudias bridge.
Enjoy!!
