Papenburg Vacation Guide
Papenburg is a city in the district of Emsland in Lower Saxony, Germany, situated at the river Ems. It is known for its large shipyard, the Meyer-Werft, which specializes in building cruise liners.
Papenburg has been founded in 1631 by Dietrich von Velen. It's a typical fen settlement. The city itself is not very wide but very long - about 18 km. It's been said that Papenburg is the longest city in Germany.
As already said above the Meyer Shipyard is the main employer in the area. Some of the biggest cruise ships sailing the world seas have been built here.
The old shipyard nowadays is a cultural center. You find a theatre there aswell as a hall for concerts and exhibitions.
The open-air museum "Von-Velen" shows the evolution of Papenburg from a fen settlement to a modern city.
