Pangandaran is a small coastal resort town at the south coast of West Java, in the southern Ciamis regency. Pangandaran is a popular weekend and tourist destination with people from Jakarta.
Its beach is considered to be one of the finest in Java and offers excellent surfing. Each morning and evening you can see the local fisherman with their colorfull boats bringing in the day's catch or the locals pulling in the nets.
The tsunami of 2006 did a lot of damage to the little town but slowly everything is being rebuilt.
A kite-flying festival is held in July each year and is worth visiting. Apart from the many colorful kites, there is also a performance of traditional dances.
On a peninsula next to the town lies the Penanjung Pangandaran National Park. 80% is secundary rainforest and with a bit of luck you can spot monkeys, deers and other wildlife. The park also hosts the Rafflesia.
