Food as it shouldn't be Aug 14, 2015
My experiences eating at Panera have generally been good for enjoying their selections of soups, sandwiches and salads. One of their mottos is "Food as it should be", which always seemed sort of generic to me, but according to Panera, food should be: Good, Joyful, Tasty, Natural, Positive, Clean, Shared, Well Sourced and Exciting. The 'Clean' part is apparently related to what they call their "clean food policy", which means simple food made without artificial colors, flavors, preservatives or sweeteners. They have a 'No No List" of things they believe should not be in your food (https://www.panerabread.com/en-us/company/food-policy-no-no-list.html). I have an opinion that not everything artificial it bad for you, and not everything natural is good for you. Nevertheless, it all seems well intended and I like Panera. They have been a successful franchise, currently with around 1,900 bakery-cafes in the U.S and Canada.

This particular Panera, located near the Friendship Archway in DC’s Chinatown, looks like many others when entering, but also has a back atrium room with a high ceiling, brickwork and exposed piping. It is decorated with some metal sculptures for a nice touch. I gather this area may have been built into some existing vintage buildings, retaining some of the original architecture. The result is quite nice with wide open space above and lots of natural light streaming in. There are lots of nooks on each level here and there to enjoy a meal as well. Unfortunately, the standards at this Panera did not meet expectations. The cashier got the order wrong to begin. We ordered the "Pick Two" from which you choose two of the following: Cup/bowl of Soup, Half Sandwich, Half Salad, One Flatbread. I ordered two of these "Pick Two", but only got one when the order came. I checked the ticket and sure enough, was only charged for one. Ok, I can forgive that since two pick two may have been confusing. The soup was Broccoli Cheddar and good, but not very hot. The grilled cheese was a mess and so stuck to the little piece of wavy white cardboard that it wasn't even really edible. Maybe it just sat too long before being brought to the table, but it was disappointing anyway.

I don't go there much. Ive not been overly impressed the one time that I did go, and that was in 2009.

Too bad about the disappointing meal, Panera is usually better than that.

It looks like messed grilled cheese! They should have just served in a normal plate knowing that cheese is hot and melting...!
