Pandan Island Resort Dec 04, 2008
Description from their site:

Pandan Island is a private island with a small resort on the West coast of Occidental Mindoro, Central Philippines.

After the island was 'discovered' and the resort established in 1986 by a French adventurer, this tropical island retreat has been voted time and again as one of the top resorts in the Philippines, not in terms of luxury but for it's quality of life and it's personalized atmosphere.

Pandan Island is for people who like to spend time in tropical surroundings without cars and television. A place where you are woken up by the singing of colorful birds, where there is only a palm tree between you and the sea, where you still know your neighbors and where you may even meet a sea turtle before having your breakfast .

My Take:

I didn't stay here overnight since I don't need to stay in the island for a night. I have a friend who have his own house in the town of Sablayan which is just 15 minutes boat ride from pandan.

However, I managed to check the huts and they look decent enough. Actually the resort is beautiful plus the hospitality of the owners and the people working in the resort.

The fact that the island is near Sablayan, access to "modernity" is not a problem. However, I learned that the electricity in the island is just up to 12 midnight. The breeze from the sea is normally cool, there's no need for airconditioning. All you need is the mosquito net which is being provided by the resort.

The resort is best place to start the dive to Apo Reef. :)

well if you leave the window open it is almost like a tent inside the rooms - at least if you are cheap and go for the budget rooms like me ;)

hey, thanks for the feedback. i really don't need to stay in the island for a night. so, i have no idea how nights be in Pandan... maybe during the cold season (Dec to Feb), there's no need for a fan, but during summer where nights in the Philippines could be very warm... a tent near the beach would be a better option. :)

Pandan Island - your own little island Jul 07, 2008
If you want to go to Apo Reef you are most likely to go to North Pandan Island and use the resort on the island as your take of point. It is a perfect location on an island with a private beach in front of the bungalows and rooms. There is very good snorkelling just of the beach and you can go diving as well. There is a jungle on the island - and despite the small size of the island people have managed to get themselves lost in the jungle. I have no clue how you can do this on such a small island - but apparently you can.

On the island is a small resort with some bungalow with private facilities and some budget rooms with shared toilet and bath. When you visit the island you kind of have to eat at the restaurant as well given it is the only place to eat on the island. This is not a major problem given the food is pretty good and not too expensive.

All the rooms share a common feature - the water in the shower is salt - and there is no aircon or fan because the electricity supply on the island is limited. This means the nights can be a bit hot and humid.

The dive shop is run as a separate unite to the resort but the dive master are generally very experienced with lots and lots of dive both around the island and on Apo Reef. One minus of the dive shop is they did forget to ask to see my dive certificate before I went diving. If this is standard procedure or a result of the fact I arrived with another diver and we talked about how we had just been diving a few days before on the wrecks at Coron I do not know.

You may be better of booking ahead all year round. In the high season you will need to book ahead because they are quite often full - the rest of the year you may want to book ahead to make sure there will be some one around to check you in when you arrive. In the off season people have arrived with no staff around.

Getting there you can book a private minivan to pick you up at either San Jose or Abra de Ilog but unless you are a big group this option is pretty pricy and you are better of using local transport. If you want to use the internet there is internet available on the island for a high fee of 120 per hour. They can also take care of your laundry for a reasonable price though I have long forgotten how much.

Right at the centre of the beach is the bar where you can meet up with whom ever is on the island at night or go for a came of darts or pool. The prices at the bar is reasonable and the supply of the bar is one of the things which gives of the owner is French - you can get a Ricard or red wine if you like.
