The Panda story Nov 05, 2014
I hate to see wild animals compounded in Zoos but I wanted to see the black and white furred Giant Pandas which was supposed to be a main attraction in the Zoo at Kualalumpur. To get to see the Panda one has to get an additional ticket apart from the regular zoo entrance ticket which could be an expensive affair for a foreigner other than a Malaysian.
Getting my tickets I headed to the Panda enclosure which was climate controlled and found quite a large gathering of people picturing themselves with the Panda in the background. The children were very audible and their questions about the Panda were interesting.Of the many questions one was pretty smart..
Why do Panda have black spots over its eyes, ears and body?
Well looking around searching for answers I found a story displayed through posters on the walls of the enclosure.
It was that Panda cubs one day, long ago, strayed away from their parents and were about to be attacked by a ferocious hungry Leopard. It was then that a young shepherdess who was tending her goats, fought with the leopard and chased it away thus saving the cubs. However the young girl died of the injuries sustained.
The villagers later cremated the brave girl and the cub pandas along with their parents came to the pyre, touched the ashes of the girl and wept in grief. The ashes of the girl left a permanent mark on the Pandas and thus from that day all Pandas got black spots on their eyes, ears and body.
Having read the story myself I once again looked at the Pandas and believe me the creatures looked more lovely and as fascinating as the story itself.
