Panama Viejo Reviews
Panama Viejo, the first settlement of Panama City May 03, 2009
Panama Viejo is not only the oldest Spanish settlement on the Pacific coast of Panama, it's even the oldest European settlement on the Pacific coast of the Americas. It was founded on the 15th of August in 1519 by Pedrarias Dávila. In the end the city had about 10,000 inhabitantes. On the 28th of January 1671 it was destroyed by the British under command of the Welsh Sir Henry Morgan. He burnt the city totally. The city was never rebuilt. A few years later in 1673 the city was transferred to a new location several km's to the west. This neighbourhood is today known as Casco Viejo, the old city centre of Panama City.
The ruins of Panama Viejo are interesting to visit, although from most there's not much left. The best preserved is the tower of the cathedral that's at the former central square of the city. This tower was built between 1614 and 1626. Probably this tower was used as a defense- or watch-tower , because it was next to the Casas Reales area (Royal Houses area). You can go in there several floors. There is a map to each direction, drawed how the map was in former times. You can recognize parts of it by the ruins. Furthermore the view is magnificient from the tower.
