The Pan Pacific is a great hotel in a pretty rough location. It's a poor area, with a lot street merchants trying to sell many things. Other than that, you have the Hyatt around the corner with a nice Casino and a large Robinsons Mall around the corner as well. It's work for me because the U.S. Embassy is close by. As for the hotel itself, I would call it 5 star all around, service and rooms.

An opulent oasis in a poverty-stricken city Oct 19, 2010
This review is gonna sound like spam, but it's a risk I'm willing to take LOL.

Seriously, I've stayed in many hotels in my life, but the Pan Pacific Hotel in Manila is by far the best hotel I have ever stayed in.

When I came across this place on, it claimed it was a 5-star hotel. I immediately became skeptical when I saw the rate (it was about $127 USD per night, including taxes and fees). For a 5-star hotel?

As it turned out, the hotel was everything it claimed to be, and more. The lobby is huge, with plenty of butlers at the guests' every beck and call. Yes, this hotel brags about its butler service; any guest who needs something need only to press a button on his or her room phone and one of the butlers will take care of the problem.

I was also very impressed by the security; to enter the hotel, you have to go through a metal detector, and you have to use your key card to use the elevators. These measures appear to be unfortunately necessary, given the hotel's location (more on that later).

When I got to my room, I noted that there was a working doorbell right next to the door. Wow! I've never stayed in a hotel in which each room had its own doorbell before. :) The room was very spacious, as was the bathroom, which was equipped with french doors and a separate shower and bath tub, which had a television installed over it so you can watch TV as you soak.

The room had two closets and a huge bed that was firm yet comfortable. The big flat-screen TV displayed a large variety of channels. I got two free bottles of water per day, and a free newspaper.

The gym and pool area were very nice, though fairly small. I didn't swim, but I did stretch out on the pool chairs to read for a while.

Another awesome aspect about the hotel was that it was connected to Adriatico Square, a complex consisting of a variety of eateries, a poker room and a massage parlor.

I have only two complaints about this hotel:

1) I'm a pretty big guy, and I had a difficult time using the toilet, which was squeezed into a corner between the shower and wall containing a phone and toilet paper ring. Conversely, the glass shower was quite large. The shower could be a bit smaller to provide a little more room around the toilet bowl.

2) The location was simply terrible. The hotel is located in Malate, which is rife with extreme poverty. It was tough to walk the streets and constantly be besieged by guys trying to sell me Viagra and offering me women to sleep with. And it was so sad to see the poor children, wearing dirty clothes and running around the foul-smelling streets in bare feet or sleeping on the sidewalks. This is why such a marvelous hotel was so cheap. It was terribly depressing.

As great as this place was, the location is bad enough to keep from staying here again. I would only recommend it for people who have to come to Manila for business. If you're a tourist, do yourself a favor and stay somewhere in the metro area outside the city.

I liked how they made the bed. :)
