Palmerston North or in Māori Te Papa-i-oea is the main city of the Manawatu-Wanganui region of the North Island of New Zealand. It is an inland city with a population of 79,800 (June 2008 estimate). A large proportion of its population consists of students attending the 3 universities: Massey University, Universal College of Learning (UCOL) or International Pacific College. Over half of the city's population is under the age of twenty-five and as a result, the city has been marketed as 'Student City'.
Locals refer to the city simply as "Palmy".
Palmerston North has an estimated population of 78,400.
The City is a major rail centre with the main trunk line and has a commuter service to the capital city Wellington every work day. State Highway 1 passes through the region, and there are excellent roading connections north, south, east and west.
Palmerston North International Airport has domestic services to all of major cities as well as many provincial centres.
