I was in the Palm Springs area to attend Coachella in April of this year.

My friend and I went to lunch in Palm Springs. She said after lunch, "What else is there to do here?" I had a faint memory of there being some sort of aerial tram in the area. From downtown Palm Springs the drive to the aerial tram is about 15 minutes.

The ticket cost about $23.00 and is a 10 minute ride to the top. You begin at an elevation of 2,643 ft and end at an elevation of 8,516 ft (Mountain Station). The car you ride in rotates the entire way up and down and offers stunning views of Palm Springs, The Coachella Valley and the surroundings.

My stomach did get a little queasy and the tram swings a bit in motion but once we made it to the top I was glad for the journey. At the top you can dine, have a snack and hike if you so choose.

There are reportedly 57 miles of hiking trails in the San Jacinto State Park. All trails are accessed by exiting the Mountain Station and descending concrete pathways less than a mile into the valley.

I didn't personally do any hiking. I enjoyed the views available around the visitor at the top. Beware the temperature drops pretty dramatically at the top. About 30 degrees difference! Bring a sweat shirt if you have one.

I highly suggest that if you are in the Palm Springs/Coachella Valley area you take a trip on the aerial tram.

Cool thing to do in Palm Springs May 06, 2010
At least once, you should take the aerial tramway in Palm Springs. It is pretty incredible. You go from 90 degrees on the bottom to snow at the top. You can also camp at the top as it is a national park. Very cool and beautiful!

So I went to Palm Springs in February of 2006 and the one thing I wanted to do out there is go on the Palm Spring Ariel Tram. But sigh..that didn't happen because my friend got called into work. So this year when I went to Phoenix this year I made a pit stop in Palm Springs for 2 days so I could go on the Tram.

I think I had a hyped up expectation in my head about how it would be. All I knew at that point is you go up a mountain on a tram 2 and a half miles up and within that point you get to see the eco-zones from Mexico to Alaska. I wanted to go in the winter to see the snow, but until a couple days before I went there was no I thought I was going to be greatly dissapointed.

But let me tell you a little bit about the tram and what you see. Francis F. Crocker, an electrical engineer, wanted to "go up there where it's nice and cool" durint the hot summer months in the 1930's. By 1950, technicians were moving ahead on designs for the Tramway, spending more than $250,000 solving riddles of road and tower construction and the tram was finished in 1963.

At the top there is an over priced restaurant and 54 miles of hiking trails in Mount San Jacinto State Park. The next thing I want to do is hike up Mount San Jacinto. You can get camping permits for day passes and hike up instead of using the Tram. I think this would be an awesome adventure.
