Palm Garden Village Hotel Anuradhapura Reviews
Little has changed since 1997 Feb 08, 2012
According to Lonely Planet, this is a top hotel in Anuradhapura. If so, other accommodations in the town must be really, really bad than. Our first impression, however was very positive. The hotel is situated in a beautiful green garden. The reception building is semi-colonial architecture and is very nicely decorated. We were welcomed with a drink and hot towels. We already felt very welcome and were happy to stay here.
On the website they also offer triple room, which I booked. When we were escorted to our cottage we saw a dirty stretcher in front of our door. This would not have meant for us, we thought/hoped. I clearly booked a triple room and not a double room with extra bed. And if that was indeed the intention, they should have clearly indicate that.
So yes, the dirty stretcher was our third bed that quickly had to be made. Weird, I have booked this room so long ago but it's completely unprepared. We also have no third towel.
This hotel was built in 1997. Little has been done since then. Even the towels seem to date from 1997.
When you use the shower, it's falls apart, literally. We quickly discover that we only have cold water and the air conditioning does not work. It was fixed after we have complained.
The hotel staff is a bunch of idiots. They are curious and always present. They continuously came back to ask a stupid question. They bring something we had not ordered and are totally unaware that what they say is not appropriate. I understand that three ladies in a hotel full of elderly people may be interesting. But they were just rude. Such as, one of us was labeled as an old lady. :S They also kept touching and moving our stuff like books on table. So we had absolutely no privacy while eating and drinking.
The next morning we were awakened by someone who was trying to open our door. Not even knocking first, but pulling on the door for a few minutes. One of us went to check who that eagerly person was and what he wanted to do inside our room. It was one of the hotel staff members. Just wanted to know if we wanted to check out. Seriously? This was the final straw. We leave. At the front desk they ask why we leave a day earlier. We say we are unhappy about the hotel and have changed our mind.
This is such a pity because the hotel has a potential to be on top. The pool is lovely, but the pool beds are moldy. The location is very nice with big garden and a lake where occasionally elephants can be seen. The colonial style looks good, but the nineties nuances are shabby. The hotel staff is totally unprofessional. All in all, this is not a good value for money.
We were very disappointed. But also very happy that we have decided to leave here after one night instead of two.

Tropical garden, colonial style, near historic sites. Dec 27, 2009
Arriving in hotel Palm Garden Village (***) we got a welcome drink and a very cold towel to refresh yourself. The reception area and lobby are very nice furnished in colonial style.
Hotel rooms (a couple in one building) are in bungalows in the tropical garden. Requires a little bit of walking to get to your room. We passed a nice pool, unfortunately didn’t have the chance to use it (we arrived late and left early again, stayed here only for one night).
All rooms have verandas. Spacious room, nicely furnished, spacious bathroom with one remark: the ‘nooks and crannies’ of the shower cubicle do need to be cleaned!
Mini bar and television in the room. A mosquito repellent appliance as well.
We had a set menu (buffet style) for dinner. Good food, nice atmosphere and friendly staff!
In the early morning (before breakfast, which was a good provided buffet again) we walked a little along the lake at the backside of the hotel garden. There was a warning for wild elephants (they are supposed to come to water in the evening), we didn’t encounter them.
After breakfast we left for the nearby sites of Anuradhapura.
