Palenque, located in the state of Chiapas, in southern Mexico is a small town near the present Mayan ruins of the same name. Because of its proximity to the Palenque ruins (approx 9kms), the town caters to travellers very well by offering a relatively high number of hostels, posadas and hotels as well as being a bustling hub for local and regional transportation. Food can be cheap in the small taco stands, but if you need something more substantial there are many restaurants to choose from.
Palenque is propably most famous for its archeological Maya Site, near the city. There are regular combis constantly coming and going from the ruins. Walking between the trees, admiring the ancient architecture, that's what Palenque stands for. The site is medium sized, compared to others, but it contains many important and beautiful Maya architecture, sculptures and carvings.

Originally, the plan was a little different. I had heard about something called the Pan-American Highway that extended in one way or another from Canada all the way down through Panama. There was about 60 miles of jungle and then the Pan-American Highway (South) would pick back up in Colombia and just head south to either Chile or Argentina, I forget which one. And so with nothing but the bag on my back on a handful of moxy, I was going to walk, ride and hitch all the way down to Panama. Afte...

We went out to the Mayan ruins of Palenque (that´s our second set of
ruins in a week!!). They were amazing despite the ridiculous heat...the
ruins were like a lost city set amongst gorgeous
jungle...apparently they were abandoned in 900AD and then were
completely covered by the jungle for hundreds of years! Cool huh! After
this overkill in ruins, we made our way through a secret path in the
jungle, tipped off by our landlady. Just when we were sure that
we had come the wron...

After our first overnight bus from Campeche we arrived with sleepy dust in our eyes! We were taken by taxi to the middle of nowhere which in realty is a place called El Pachan, which is about 5 minutes from Palenque in the national park. With high hopes of using our hammocks for the first time we soon discovered that would be near impossible unless we wanted to be eaten alive!
We dumped our stuff and soon were change, when Naomi found out how tasty she was to the local insects, in engli...
