Paldiski is a small Baltic Sea port-town in the north west of Estonia. It first became a Russian naval base in the 19th century, during the Soviet times it was a Soviet Navy nuclear submarine training center, closed to public. After Estonia restored its independence and Soviet Army left Paldiski it became quite deserted, with derelict buildings and army bases. Right now less than 5000 people live there, there is one hotel and a couple of grocery-shops in the town.
But the most important thing is that Paldiski is situated in place with fantastic scenery. Cliffs, wild beaches, rocky shores, all these things attract people from Tallinn that is situated just 50km from Paldiski.

Lost town with beautiful surroundings

First time I got to Paldiski was about year and a half ago. And it is just 50 kilometers from Tallinn!! But now it is one of my favorite places in Estonia. Paldiski was founded by Peter the 1st as a sea fortress, right before the second world war Soviet Union decided to make an army base with a nuclear rector out of it and deported all citizens from there. So it became a closed secret border town - center for soldier studies and trainings. And stayed like that for many decades. Only in the n...

V nenápadnom tichom mestečku Paldiski na západe Estónska uvidíte blízko cesty zničené budovy klasickej sovietskej výstavby. V týchto budovách sa kedysi nachádzala najväčšia prísne tajná ponorková základňa bývalého ZSSR. Pred rokom 1994 bolo mesto rušnou vojenskou základňou nuklárnych zbraní a ponoriek a domov 16000 vojakov. Po odchode vojakov sa populácia drasticky zredukovala na súčasných 4200 osôb a Paldiski upadlo do desivej...
