Great palace! Apr 17, 2011
The Ducal palace is a fine collection of buildings which were constructed by the rulers of Mantua during the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries. The façade is very reminiscent of the other famous palace in Venice near St Mark’s square. Inside the rooms are beautifully decorated, to the extent that even the most enthusiastic of visitors are bound to get a little museum fatigue here. The room that attracts the most attention is the Camera degli Sposi, and quite rightly so. The frescoes were painted by Mantegna here during the fifteenth century, and the details and vivid colour demand your full attention. I think there’s a time limit (15 minutes) and/or person limit here (only a certain amount of people can be in the room at any one time). So if you have to wait a little in high season, its because they are controlling the numbers for conservation reasons.

Overall, this is a very nice visit and is perhaps an essential visit for anyone in Mantua.
