Painted Turtle Guest House Nanaimo Reviews
5 star luxury hostel at the price of a 2 star hotel, plus the receptionists are hawwt! May 26, 2012
I've been a member of Hostelling Intl for over 7 yrs now, and when you stay in hostels such as this, it's easy to see why. Painted Turtle Guesthouse is in the heart of Nanaimo, very easy to find and couldn't have been better. It's been one of the best hostels I've stayed in.
I had booked online - so checking in was very easy. But what I really appreciated was how the lady took me around and showed the rooms, the kitchen, etc. Plus, they give you this little wristband for a 2 CAD deposit which will get you discounts around select rsnts (not that I used any).
Their central room, as they call it is a foosball - lounge - kitchen - big dining table rolled into one. It's quite cosy, small for the # of people in it but I liked how they have one big dining table (think an Ikea version of the Last Supper) that forces one to socialise with others. During my stay, the majority happened to be German (Germans love BC, don't they?!)
The bedrooms are great. The really innovative thing is next to safes (on the wall), they have power outlets so you can leave your iPod or laptop for charging (and lock the safe) if you're going out. Very clean bathrooms as well.
what I also loved was the WiFi access. You have 3-4 wireless networks (one for each floor, and one for the central room) so the network strength was amazing. Another big PLUS for this hostel.
The kitchen is well stocked - lots of fridge space and extra spices in case you're planning on cooking.
And those receptionists are cute! And super helpful!
The only 2 problems I had are the beds - the bunkerbeds are noisy and you can't roll around without disturbing the person below you. Also the parking. Granted, the hostel isn't responsible but it was a bit confusing - the commercial street parking adjacent to the hostel is free till 10am, but you have to park at a paid parking the rest of the day. That was also a bit unnerving to ensure your car doesn't get towed away!
But all in all, a very nice hostel. I'd definitely return, and encourage others to check it out as well!

Nive hostel on Vancouver Island Dec 06, 2010
A quite hostel near the pubs and clubs of Nanaimo. Maybe I had a bad night but it was very loud at 2am the weekend I stayed there.
Friendly Swiss staff that know the city well. Some limited shopping nearby with a few cool cafes just around the corner.
