Padma Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park Darjeeling Reviews
Go mostly for the Red Pandas... Nearly a trekking zoo! Jun 28, 2013
This zoological park is special mostly for the presence of rare animals like the endangered Red Pandas (the main attraction), Snow Leopards (beautiful animal) and Tibetan Wolves. They are really cute. It is also the largest high altitude zoo of India at 7000 ft.
You will climb up and down stairs and hills A LOT in that park; don't go there if you don't feel well or rested or right after an exhausting trekking.
You can easily arrange a taxi from the heart of Darjeeling to bring you there and pick you up later (pre-arrange the time before the taxi drops you at the zoo) to bring you back in the heart of town.
The constant reminder of cages is a bit annoying; that park would definitly gain in making enclosures that are safe for both animals & visitors but with less fences like many zoos are doing nowadays. It's not that easy to enclose a tiger without a cage, but some enclosures seemed so small, the animals, especially the Tibetan Wolves & the Bengal Tigers, seemed unhappy and stuck in there. Seemed kind of sad.
The Souvenirs shop was pretty affordable, in comparison to other similar shops sitting within attractions of that kind; I bought a bunch of postcards and stamps for a very reasonnable price there.
The absence of people constantly trying to sell you something was also very enjoyable.
