A Free event that you should not Miss! Feb 08, 2011
Ok as a Brighton resident I love Brighton “Paddle around the Pier” event! Coupled with blazing sunshine, a mild sea breeze and free entry to the biggest free watersports festival in Europe, you could ask for a better event to go to! I mean what more could you want? Even if water sports is not your thing, there was an excellent programmed of music held in the big top featuring many of Brighton’s finest acts, including Baba Slips, Mean Poppa Lean, Transformer, The Half Sisters, Wide Eyed Order, Lucky Jim, Fat 45 and Los Albertos who, as usualI know what your thinking Urm!! Who?? But trust me the fresh sounds of Brighton and all it has to offer will be refreshing!

The greatest thing about this event is that it’s all for charity, all the bands play for free, and an enormous amount of work is put into the event every year by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Also this awesome free beach festival offers a wide range of activities you can come along and try including water, street and urban sports plus “have a go” activities surfing, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, skating, windsurfing, free running, surf lifesaving, streetball, mountain boarding and freestyle mountain biking.

The action kicks off with the Funky Puffin Euro Enduro, a 20-mile stand-up paddle to Worthing Pier and back, for professional paddleboarders. Later there is a sea swim and the Paddle Something Unusual competition where teams navigate around the West Pier and back in oddball rafts.

Sunday sees the event that launched the festival. Hundreds of people will take to the water on surfboards, bodyboards, paddle boards, canoes and paddle around the West Pier.

More than 40,000 people pass through the Paddle Village where new-wave disco quartet Transformer, Red Hot Chili Peppers-inspired five-piece Mean Poppa Lean and Fat 45, who draw on 1940s and 1950s dance music, will play and the Kids Corner will feature dance, martial arts, Punch and Judy, clowns and donkey rides.

This event is truly one not to miss!
