Packing List-high altitude hikes
Packing List-high altitude hikes Kathmandu Reviews
Don't forget these items Mar 20, 2011
After travelling to Kala Pataar overlooking Everest Base Camp I was lucky that my guiding outfit provided me with a list of essentials to bring.
Aside from the obvious such as touqes, long underwear, warm layers, good hiking boots, many items can be missed for this kind of trip.
Must items that may be overlooked:
Diamox: this helps reduce the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness. We were advised to take this if required but I would probably take this before starting any hikes of high attitude.
Sunscreen/Lip Balm: At least SPF 30. The intensity of UV rays whether sunny or cloudy is magnified at high altitudes.
Metal Water Bottle: I would recommend bringing 2. One used for drinking and one used for keeping you warm in the sleeping bag.
Neck Warmer/Bandana: The face gets very cold at these heights and it can get quite dusty along the mountain trails.
Sunglasses: Again, the intensity of the UV rays and the reflection off the snow can be blinding and damaging to the eyes.
