Pack of Cards Inn Combe Martin Reviews
A peculiarity as an inn - but good drinks. Dec 06, 2010
In saying that the drinks are good, Iam not saying anything against their food or hospitlaity - I have experienced neither.
Combe Martin is an attractive small North Devon resort. Apparently in the second part of the seventeenth century, one George Ley, related to the first Earl of marlborough had a large win in a game of cards and decided to have a dwelling house built with references to a pack of cards.
The ground was 52 feet square, there were 4 floors, 13 rooms, 52 windows and 52 stairs. prior to window tax the panes of glass in all the windows added up to the total of the numbered cards in a pack!
How daft can you get?
By the first half of the 19th century it had become a pub.
