One of my favorite things in life is a good natural history museum. This is a good natural history museum. The Pacific Grove "Museum" of Natural History is not.Affectionately (not really) referred to as "the roadkill museum," the PGMNH is essentially just that - taxidermied victims of "motor traffic." No, really, there are signs in the display cases. I imagine the museum was founded when some fool ran out into the road after a squirrel was hit (yes, there are squirrels in the museum), stuffed it, and decided to put it on display. In civilized towns we get those people psychiatric help. In Pacific Grove we give them a museum. In addition to an entire floor of stuffed roadkill (including a wall of dead pigeons), there is an upper floor full of rocks. Rocks. There are also some dead insects up there (some intentionally, some not). There are only two saving graces to this museum: one, it's free; and two, there is a huge whale eye in a jar if you know where to look. Why they don't make the whale eye - clearly the most interesting exhibit in the place - the focus of the room is beyond me. However, if you come in the front door and go to the right, through the roadkill room and past it, there's a little side room on the street side of the building. Inside you'll find the whale eye and a bunch of stupid stuff you can ignore. Like rope. Who goes to a natural history museum to see rope?Go for the whale eye, because it's free. Then go do something else.
