Pacha Mama San Juan del Sur Reviews
Pacha Mama Hostel Mar 18, 2011
San Juan del Sur is nested in little bay with long sandy beach, lots of hostels and small hotels servicing mostly gringos on their trip to good surfing grounds. Easiest way to get here is by bus from Rivas (1 hour trip, 15 cordobas) , but you can also take some colectivo taxi or bus (if colectivo is full it charges around 35 cordobas which is extremely cheap, and gets to the Rivas in 30 min), or come by boat…
Pacha Mama is hostel in relatively new building, with lots of free space inside and outside. First and most important about this place is that it is a surfer’s hostel. It is super relaxed, friendly, very close to the beach, not too clean and not too expensive. I paid $8 per night (22 cordoba =$1), and hostel was constantly full to the point that some people slept on makeshift beds and hammocks. My dorm had six beds, not too much room to go around, but totally ok.
Large lockers where you can fit an elephant and smaller ones for bags and belongings are available for every bed. Sheets are clean, and cleaning ladies sweep the place every few hours. Four dorms are on the ground floor, and I believe that privates are on the second floor. Two fairly clean bathrooms/showers inside of the house, and toilet outside. There are also showers behind the house in the garden. In the courtyard you can play table tennis, lots of board and card games, or watch TV/Videos in community area.
Garden area used to be bar, but now it is just bunch of tables under the trees, ok place to chill and do your thing. In the front of the hostel there is also small garden that has bunch of rocking chairs and it is constantly in the shade of a large tree. Most of the people hand out there or in the court inside the building. Hostel has good, organized trips to different beaches in the area, you can surf, or take surf lessons, go fishing… Boards are hanging all over the place, and if you never tried surfing, you’ll be tempted to learn and hit the beach.
Hostel is half block away from the beach, but that beach is not great for surfing or swimming. There is river entering the beach and it brings some green algae, and water looks dirty from dirt particles. Surrounding beaches are much nicer, and they are not far away. San Juan is small but very good as a base to chill, it has lots of cheep nice restaurants, and city improvements are constantly going on. There are no major hotel chains here, but nice houses are getting built all around.
San Juan has issue with water and power, you can’t get it all day long or any time you want it . Good news is that usually in the end of the day water is available for shower, and power disappears for only few hours here and there. Internet is widely available, and there is also one computer station for people that don’t have their own.
I liked this place

Avery friendly and nice place, but we got robbed in the room here, so lock your things up if you`re staying here! It a small kitchen and only two bathrooms, wich is little for that many beds.. and they often got extremely dirty, but if you dont mind these things, it`s a nice place to stay ;)
