The town is named after the legend of Princess Owatonna, a native American princess that was said to be healed by a spring that runs through Owatonna. With about 25,000 citizens, the town's activities are centered mainly around the high school. Owatonna High School is a strong academic, athletic, and musical school and most Friday nights are spent at the football, basketball or volleyball game.

Owatonna's working community usually are employed at Federated Insurance, Viracon, or Wenger. Each of these companies are know nation wide. Viracon is known internationally. They create glass for large corporations and you can find their work at places such as the Louvre pyramid in Paris, France. There are also many quaint family owned business in Owatonna that are scattered mainly throughout downtown.

Owatonna is a beautiful town with a vast array of historical buildings and places combined with the beauty of the heartland. One important historical place in Owatonna is the State Orphanage that is now a museum and the city offices. People travel across the state to see the buildings that made up the place that was home to so many children from 1886-1945.
