Good Mongolian hotel with helpful staff Nov 10, 2012
N47°55'20.13" E106°52'48.20" Hotel is part of an unknown hotel management school with students working in the hotel to learn new skills and languages. Giarda Tours has its office on the 1st floor and caters primarily for Dutch tourist. The hotel is therefore known as the Dutch hotel. Hotel rooms are on the 3rd and 4th floor. The 5th floor is a hostel. Our rooms 308 and 408 are next to a karaoke bar, with very drunk and very loud singing Mongols. Sleeping with closed window was mandatory during our stay in August 2012. The room itself is spacious, reasonably maintained and clean (important). The double bed is firm, but not rock hard. The bath and shower wasn't used first time, due to the repair work on the central heating system in Ulaanbaatar. The only shower with a boiler in the hotel was out of order. We managed with the water cooker in the room. During our second stay, the hot shower was excellent.

Breakfast in the restaurant on the second floor is not a buffet. It takes a long time, but it is good. For speedy breakfast, order at the reception the day before. Wi-Fi is available. Ask reception for passwords. Staff is very helpful in solving small problems, arranging taxis and making diner reservations. This hotel succeeded in its primary goal: a good night sleep.

Excellent for a full and hilarious Mongolian experience Aug 20, 2011
We booked a complete tour through Mongolia with tour operator Tiara Tours, which is based in this hotel. We therefore got the full package here: the nice double room and breakfast and dinner included.

The hotel was built in early 2011, but it stills looks a bit shabby, especially on the outside. The double room we got was large and comfortable though.

There were a couple of interesting situations which might be weird in any other country, but we learned that they were perfectly normal for Mongolian standards:

1)The hotel is located in the IV Microdistrict and since there was maintenance on the sewerage or pipes in that district, there was no warm water for weeks. Luckily it was quite warm in Ulaan Bator in that period, so it was no big deal.

2)There’s a sign at the reception desk that says there’s free WiFi in the hotel. At the reception they give you the password to log in, but it is impossible to get a connection. Since nobody at the hotel speaks anything else than Mongolian, there’s no way of finding out what is wrong here. Luckily there’s an internet café around the corner.

3)The girls at the restaurant/ bar at the first floor are very involved with the television and their cell phones. You need to throw a bomb at them in order to get their attention. I suppose this is an old Soviet habit that is hard to shake off. Once they are present, they are very nice and friendly, even though they do not understand a single word you are saying to them.

4)Toilet paper is not to be used in abundance. You get a few sheets when they’ve tidied the room, but this isn’t nearly enough for two jetlagged westerners who are getting used to different food. This results in quite embarrassing and confusing situations at the reception area.

Of course, you can choose to stay in one of the few very expensive upscale hotels, but where’s the fun in that? You may be more comfortable, but you do not come to Mongolia to be comfortable. If you want to go for the full, hilarious experience, this is the place to be.
