Ouray Overview

Ouray is a picturesque, old mining town located in the southwest corner of Colorado in the San Juan Mountains. The small community is nestled in some of the most rugged and towering peaks of the Rockies. Ouray is nestled in a narrow valley and box canyon, surrounded by towering 13,000 foot peaks. The rugged snowcapped peaks and unparalled beauty have earned Ouray the fitting nicknamed "Switzerland of America." The mining town's Victorian structures have been lovingly restored. The turn of the century charm is evident up and down Main Street. Ouray is surrounded by other notable Colorado mountain towns of Silverton, Durango and Telluride. The town is situated along highway 550 between Montrose and Durango. The stretch of highway between Ouray and Durango is also known as the Million Dollar Highway. Most people believe this name comes from the "million dollar views," though legend says that it took construction crews a million dollars a mile to build and that the dirt used to build it is filled with a million dollars of gold ore.

Ouray has an abundance of recreational activities from fishing, hiking, hot springs, and ice climbing. Avid climbers or "mountain baggers" can climb some of the states 14ers including Mt. Sneffels which is at the peak of the beautiful Yankee Boy basin. Jeeps owners and four wheel enthusiasts flock to Ouray to tackle some of the states's most challenging trails such as The Alpine Loop or difficult Black Bear Pass between Red Mountain Pass and Telluride. Mesa Verde National Park and the Colorado National Monument are both just a short drive away.

Ouray is a nice small town with some services.
