Oudtshoorn, South Africa (Old Horn directly translated into English), is located approximately 1 hour (by car) north of George, which is the location of the closest airport and approximately 4 hours east of Cape Town. Oudtshoorn is home to the South African National Defense Force (SANDF) Infantry School and supporting establishments such as the infantry equipment research, development and acquisitions departments. Outdshoorn is also a popular tourist destination as a center of eco-tourism. Also known as the ostrich capital of the world, it is home to several large ostrich farms, thus defining the local cuisine and, at the same time, serving as a popular destination to explore these interesting animals and, in some cases, go for a ride on them. There are other wild-life refuges in the area, as well as a fairly large cave complex. Down town Oudtshoorn has a charming shopping area and several upscale restaurants of varying genres. Oudtshoorn is said, by the locals, to experience 4 seasons every day. Due to its fairly arid high desert climate, radical temperatures can be experienced from day to day, with comfortable mid-day warmth, to chilly nights and mornings.
