Otto's Shrunken Head New York Reviews
The only Tiki, zombie, punker, biker bar in existance! Apr 20, 2012
Tucked away in a more secluded part of the east village is Otto's Shrunken Head. To say this is an awesome dive bar with cheap drinks, interesting people and boat loads of atmosphere is understating the obvious.
Let us clear this up straight away, this is not somewhere you'd go for a classy quiet night with the family or friends who want to suit up and sip cocktails (yes, I really do have some mates like that). This is a bar where you come to enjoy the live music, cheap drinks, random people and get pretty much sh*t faced in the process. That being said there are some good cocktails on offer here which are pricier than the beers on offer but they come in Otto’s own hand made mugs. You can then either keep the mug afterwards or return it to get $5 off the drink.
A night here is very much what you make it and I can't say I've ever had a bad one, though there are a couple of nights I don't remember much. Sometimes rather than a band they have a random event going on in the back, I’ve turned up to an improv stand-up comedy night here with a few friends were the number of comedians outnumbered the members of the audience. Still a cracking time was had by everyone and at the end of the night the mic was open to all comers.
The decor here is tikki meets rockabilly meets punk and it works pretty well. The dark lighting and pinball/arcade machines add to the bar's dive feel and some of the characters you'll see/meet can make or break your evening. The bands are usually good regardless of genre and the crowd despite packing tattoos and punk or biker clobber are mostly very friendly and I've always found that I end up chatting to randoms in addition to the people I came with.
The main pitfall of Otto’s is the location; there is nowhere else immediately nearby which means if you plan on coming here for a night unless you mind walking for a good 15 mins to hit St Marks (8th street) you will either need to taxi here or end the evening here. That being said it is a place where you easily end/top off a great night out. I'm biased as I love places like this where it's easily walked past but if you stumble in randomly one night it feels much like you’ve discovered a rare hidden gem. The randomness of the nights they have here are what make Otto's Shurnken Head the place that it is, definitely somewhere to come to socialise and have a drunken good time.
