Otterndorf Overview

Otterndorf is a small town located by the mouth of the Elbe into the North Sea. From the town centre it is about two and a half kilometres to the sea shore. Strictly speaking, this is not yet the sea but still the last bit of the river, which geographically ends at Cuxhaven, 18 kilometres further downstream. The river is already very wide and the tides hit with full force. The Elbe mouth is a busy waterway and excellent for ship spotting.

Otterndorf is the centre of the region known as Land Hadeln, an area with very interesting history. The town has a pretty old centre on a Wurt, an artificial hill that was created to protect the settlement from the frequent floods in the wet marshland.
