Otavalo Mercado Reviews
A Veritable Meal for the Senses Sep 21, 2013
When I started to look at Ecuador as a destination, I went to all the research websites. I looked at all the ideas of others and made my decisions. One of the favorite places was Otavalo.
Otavalo is an indigenous town , in the Imbabura Province of Ecuador of some 100,000 inhabitants. It is surrounded by the mountains of Imbabura, Cotacachi and Mojandi volcanoes. It is 2.5 hours away from Quito, but Ecuador has an excellent, cheap bus system. I resolved to go and visit on market day.
Despite the scenic location of Otavalo, it also has what is said to be the largest outdoor market in South America. This was of interest to me and becameone of my Ecuador bucket list items.
The indigenous Otavaenos are skilled as well as famous for their wool woven textiles, sold especially on Saturday..traditional market day. As a result , tourism has become the town's main industry.
I wanted to visit this place some two hours from Quito, where the inhabitants still dress in traditional clothing.
The market was huge...bustling with people ..buying ..selling....and very much alive. Prices were extremely reasonable.
This is none of those interesting places....if you want to see local South American flavors..and taste the local life.
Well worth the time , energy and expense it still does not surpass the mountain splendor of Ecuador.. Would suggest a full day, to really absorb the flavors. Easy transportation from Quito by bus, at less that $2.00
This was a meal for the senses and I got to see a different part of Ecuador.
