Östersund is located in Jämtland, in the middle of Sweden.Östersund, Jämtland's only city, is situated on the eastern shore of lake Storsjön. Östersund has a 400 year old legend that there is a storsjödjuret, or lake monster, living in the lake.
There is not a lot to do in Ostersund itself, but it does have Jamtli, a village showing the history of the area which is really interesting, and there are lots of winter activities in the area. Nearby there is a moose garden and the Frösö zoo. You'll also find the city museum, glass blowing, handicrafts, geohuset, and the northern most ruin stone in Sweden. Östersund also offers hiking trails nearby as well as recreational paths along the lake. The city has an airport which has a bus service connecting to the city, train station, and a few hotels and hostels. The city offers many cafes for fika as well as plenty of restaurants.

small city pretty much in the middle of Sweden and sits on the shore of
Storsjön. It started out as a city way back when it was a market town.
In the city, they have an open-air museum with old buildings depicting
lives of farmers from all over the area throughout time. The museum is
called Jamtli and they just happen to have a hostel on the grounds. So
of course we stayed there. Very nice quaint hostel even though i...
