Osteria Della Fragoletta Mantua Reviews
Lovely traditional restaurant Jul 14, 2011
Close to Sordello piazza and the heart of the city, this restaurant offers good traditional cuisine at affordable prices and a long winelist of tens of local wines but also from Austria,Germany and more than 20 Champagne and 25 Burgundian wines!
As starters at lunch,Danielle had a great green salad(8 euro) and me a spalla cotta di San Lorenzo,8 euro,(cooked pork shoulder),the most oldest(12th century) speciality of Parma area served with mostarda di mele(mostarda is an Italian condiment made of candied fruits and a mustard flavoured syrup, traditionally the mostarda di Mantova is made from small sour apples).
My wife had then a typical dish of the area:nice tortelli di zucca,8 euro(pumpkin tortelli),a sweet and sour dish related to the Christmas tradition(often served on Christmas Eve) where the add of mustard gives a spicy flavor to the sweetness of the pumpkin. It's a very old delicacy dating back the Renaissance.
As main I had delicious bigoli con guianciale(8 euro):bigoli are like pici in Tuscany, extruded long pasta, guianciale is a delicacy of central Italy,an unsmoked bacon made with pig's jowl or cheeks. It is traditionally used in pasta all'amatriciana or spaghetti alla carbonara.
Tip:for grandmas, facing the restaurant there is a nice shop selling some beautiful clothes for children!
Our best value for money restaurant of our trip!
Part of the Italian Renaissance gems:Mantova,Ferrara and around travel blog
