Ossuaire de Douaumont Verdun Reviews
Memorial and cemetery in honor of the fallen of Verdun Aug 06, 2012
The outside of this memorial is free for visitors. We did not go inside so my review is about the surrounding area and the memorial from the outside.
You can spot the large tower from a distance. It is located in the hills by Verdun and your best bet is to follow the signs for it. Finding a street address to put into your GPS isn't an option.
The memorial and ossuary housing the remains of countless unidentified remains is surrounded by a large cemetery for ca. 15,000 identified French soldiers and several memorials of different nations and ethnicities.
The amount of identical white crosses doesn't even begin to bring across the losses of the Battle of Verdun where nearly 800,000 people lost their lives.
There is a gift shop and exhibit located inside the tower along with the graves of the unidentified remains by sections. Part of the outside is being renovated at the moment. (August 2012)
