The only hotel in Osaek is failing Oct 12, 2014
N38°04.830' E128°26.822' The Green Yard Hotel is the only hotel in Osaek and famous for its carbon acid hot spring baths (oncheon). It has spread over two separate buildings, one abandoned already. The remaining is a massive building with two underground levels, a swimming pool, karaoke hall, dining hall and hot spring baths. They asked too much for a room but we settled on KRW 90.000 per night in August 2014.

On the positive site, the hot spring baths are excellent enjoyment. Separated for men and women, these facilities offer locker rooms, towels, hot and cold baths, sauna and massage on the quality-level of Japanese onsen. There is even a restaurant with standard Korean dishes and a small supermarket. We soaked away the strain from hiking the Daecheongbong Mountain. The hot springs are public baths for non-guests KRW 11.000 and guests KRW 7.000.

On the less positive site, maintenance and housekeeping standard in this hotel are failing dramatically. The restaurant was not cleaned properly, chairs had strains and tables were sticky. Our room 521 in building A on the fifth floor was not cleaned either. We only received fresh towels. It was in a state of disuse with disabled air conditioner and many non-functional appliances, like the fridge. The mosquito screen did not keep the bugs out.

This quirky way of hotel management was emphasised when we asked for laundry service. A huge fitness and karaoke hall was available but no laundry service. Someone left an old Wi-Fi (pronounced Wi-Pi) router in the restaurant unprotected by password; otherwise, free Internet would not be available at all.

The hotel became quirkier when we noticed a Mexico exhibition on floor B1. This was not enough madness when we went for breakfast on Wednesday morning: there was not any, only Sunday morning. Yes, but we had breakfast Tuesday morning. By the way, nobody told us breakfast was not included in the price.

Osaek Green Yard hotel is famous for its carbon acid hot springs. The hotel itself delivers questionable quality and service and it is not worth the KRW 90.000 per night. Maybe another Osaek motel delivers the same quality much cheaper and you can visit the hot springs as non-guest. The hot springs are recommended, but the hotel not.
