Beautiful Plantation Mar 21, 2008
½ hour South of Wilmington, the Orton Plantation is a beautiful day trip. Admission cost $9, and we ended up getting a free tour. Normally there aren’t tours, but the day we visited, there was an ’Orton Expert’, horticulturalist Bruce Williams. Built in 1725, rice was grown here until the 1930’s. The rice fields are now over-run with weeds, but workers are trying to restore it. The family that owns the plantation, the Sprunt family, still lives in the house, so it’s not open to the public, but the grounds and Luola’s Chapel are waiting to be seen. This place is also a popular film and movie location, as some of the projects that have been filmed here include Firestarter, A Walk To Remember, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Lolita, Black Knight, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Dangerous Lives Of Altar Boys, Dawson’s Creek, and One Tree Hill. It’s actually been used in over 40 movie/film projects. Full of flowers and plants, beautiful green lawns, and lovely views of the Cape Fear River, this place is definitely worth the trip and admission.
