Orroland Lodge Auchencairn Reviews
orroland Lodge Apr 11, 2010
Orroland lodge is part of a group of large private hire holiday homes on the coast near Auchencairn, southern Scotland. It is incredible, but not if you are a vegetarian…
Orroland is an old hunting lodge. If you rent it, it sleeps up to 14 people in comfortable beds, and has a huge living room, a kitchen with an AGA and a dining room with a pool table. The private gardens look out over the Solway Firth and are lovely.
There are rope swings in the trees, and loads of baths and showers. The rooms are cosily decorated in a sort of country house style. This is where the warning for vegetarians kicks in – there are two stuffed antelope hunting trophy heads in the hall. It is slightly spooky walking back to your room and getting stared at by a dead antelope. It would be worse if you had really strong opinions about whether people should have thrown all these things away by now. But in fairness, it was probably killed a century ago and it seems silly to make a fuss now. If only it would stop staring!
The lodge is miles from any sort of swimming pool, nightlife or other entertainment, and you will have to either bring your own food in or talk to one of the catering companies recommended by the house, but bedding and towels are provided. It is also quite expensive, but then it sleeps 14 and it is totally huge and lovely. It’s a great place to hold a sort of country house weekend, like you would imagine taking place early last century, and to use as a base for hiking.
Wheelchair access would be difficult, and you really do need access to a car to enjoy staying here. Children would have a great time, as long as you can trust your kids around an Aga and a cliff top.
