Comfortable Hotel in the Centre of Komotini Oct 24, 2010
The Orpheus is either the best or the worst placed hotel in Komotini, depending on whether you like being near the centre of things, or whether you fear that the centre of things will keep you awake all night. I'm in the former group, but am perfectly happy to admit that Greek night-life gets under way not long before midnight and usually continues until three or four in the morning. On the other hand, emerging from a bar knowing that one will be in bed in less than five minutes is a rare treat for someone whose usual journey home can be twenty times as long, and I was very happy at the Orpheus.

It is a modern hotel on the central Irinis Square, which in fact is not a square at all, but a common-or-garden polygon. The hotel itself has several floors (there is a lift), and I had a room on the fourth with a balcony which overlooked the Square and then the town, with the mountains of Thrace in the distance. The room had a double bed, and was well-appointed and extremely clean, although there were no facilities to make tea of coffee, and no instructions as to how to use the telephone.

The chambermaid was efficient and unobtrusive, apart from one instance of brain failure which led her to believe that, as I was on my own, I only needed bedding suitable for a single bed. Fortunately there was additional bedding stashed away in the wardrobe. The bathroom, which did not actually contain a bath, was of a decent size and there was copious hot water whenever I wanted it. There was also a fridge, which had nothing in it.

The only meals I had there were breakfasts, which are served from 7 o'clock in the main dining room. The hotel accepts coach parties, so if like me you are an early breakfaster you find yourself either sitting in the dining room in lonely splendour, or surrounded by fifty or sixty tourists jabbering away at high volume ready for an early getaway. However, the service, which was efficient if not very affable, was the same in both cases. Breakfast itself never varied, and you got what you were given - there was no menu; it consisted of tea or coffee, fruit juice, a slice of ham and cheese, two rolls, butter, marmalade or jam, two pieces of cake, and the ubiquitous large glass of water. It was all simply presented, and I found it perfectly adequate.

I have no idea as to the standard of the dining-room at other times, as I was never there.

There are many clubs and bars in Irinis Square, which is a pleasant open space with a water feature and a couple of chess-boards marked out that are big enough to use children for the pieces, although actually doing so would probably get you arrested - in this country, anyway. Very nearby is a park with fountains and seats, and unless you are really worried about the noise at night I think that the Orpheus would be a good place to stay - comfortable and well-positioned. I would certainly be happy to return.

The room rate on the hotel's official tariff seemed quite high. However, it seems that haggling about the rate is quite the done thing in Greece, especially in the low season, and I was lucky in that a local friend had been there in person to negotiate on my behalf. Accordingly I paid 45 Euros a night, including breakfast and tax, which considering the standard of the hotel was, I think, good value. I doubt that a room would be available at that rate in the high season.

There was a systems failure when I left, which meant that I couldn't use my credit card and had to pay in cash; and the receptionist, faced with this contretemps, did not inspire confidence. However, I would like to think that this was an isolated failure.
